If you’re one of those types who either dreams of playing blistering leads or arpeggios, or have been playing for a while but have hit a plateau and are looking for a way to break out… maybe re-examining your right hand (for right handed guitarists) technique is where your next opportunity lies.

An Element of Truth Everyone who has ever picked up a guitar inevitably (and understandably) focuses 100 percent of their attention on the left hand on the fretboard. This make perfect sense… it doesn’t take a whole lot of dexterity to perform the right hand action with a pick on the strings now does it… or does it? The kernel of truth here is that if you’re just strumming chords with your pals or playing rhythm acoustic by yourself or in a band then chances are right hand speed picking technique probably isn’t ever going to matter to you.

On the Other Hand – What You See on Videos Ain’t the Way to Do It Guitar speed picking performances you see on MTV videos by guys like Eddie Van Halen and all those amazing 80s metal bands show amazing speed. The blessing (and curse) of these same videos is that the right hand techniques they show are not the kinds of examples you would want to model your own playing style on. A guy like George Lynch or Eddie Van Halen can play with a pick the thickness of a ball point pen (a slight exaggeration) and still play a blistering solo. They can do that because they’re developed their own style after thousands of hours of playing. The same can’t be said for the rest of us, and as a result we consistently fail when we attempt to copy our guitar hero’s styles. Fear not however, because there is hope.
Guitar Speed Picking – For the Jukebox Hero Guitar speed picking for the rest of us needs to start at the beginning by learning proper technique with both hands, not just the neck hand. It may sound lame to many who have been playing at a certain level for years but if you’ve never learned proper right hand playing position you need to unlearn what you think you know and start with a pick, an open string, and doing it the right way from the beginning.
