An unknown homeless man (Steve Austin) surfaces on the FBI’s radar after he unwittingly thwarts a kidnapping ransom by taking out the crime boss. It is soon revealed that the Stranger is Tom Tomachevsky, a man with no memory of his past that is of extreme interest to Agent Mason Reece (Adam Beach) who has been following Tom. Agent Reece has obtained the services of Doctor Grace Bishop (Erica Cerra,) a local University Professor who specializes in Amnesia to help Tom remember a vital piece of information about a mole in the organization. The movie opens with a chase scene as the Charles Mansonesque Steve Austin is pursued by a SWAT team with less than stellar marksmanship. The MTV style blurry editing had me shoving my wallet in my mouth as a preventative measure against seizures. Luckily the rest of the film looks much better, with the exception of a motorcycle chase that does not come across as realistic. The basic storyline for The Stranger bears a resemblance to the Bourne Trilogy of films. The specifics are a bit difference but there are a lot of similarities, mainly in the Tom Tomachevsky character. There is a twist ending, however I would wager money that most will see it coming around the halfway point of the film. The finale is a major setup for The Stranger II, which I would actually check out, as I see potential in Steve Austin’s performance this time around. Having never seen a Steve Austin film before, I was not sure what to expect from the wrestler turned action star. He is great in the fight scenes, as one would expect and manages to pull off a decent Russian accent. The one area for improvement is in the flashback scenes where he is talking to his wife. He is totally unbelievable in these scenes as his delivery is very flat and uninterested as he pledges to protect his wife and child. Likewise, his interaction with the Mexican authorities falls a bit flat in the delivery. Erica Cerra plays Dr. Bishop, who the FBI has contracted to help Tom (The Stranger) regain his memory. She does a decent job in the role she is given, however mainly she is relegated to a sidekick role without much depth. Scenes as the one when she is telling about her brother’s death are well done but the relevance to her career choice is never really fleshed out past the short conversation. I liked Adam Beach as FBI agent Mason Reece until the end of the film. I can’t talk it much without giving the twist away, however suffice it to say that his scenes at the end are not his best work and are easily the low point of the movie. I was a bit surprised by the lack of special features for The Stranger. There is a making of featurettes entitled The Stranger: Behind the Scenes, however it is just over 5 minutes so there is no real depth of information. Star Steve Austin does have some interesting observations on the differences between acting in an action film and wrestling but the rest of the featurettes is too high level. Director Robert Lieberman adds a few bits of information on making an action film on a budget in a very monotone style. It would have been nice to have seen a short bit on the fight choreography but oh well.
Fans of action films may be a bit disappointed in the amount of fight scenes in The Stranger. I expected a bit more in this department, especially given the presence of Steve Austin and stunt coordinator Lauro Chartrand. The story is nothing you have not seen variations of in the past. This is a movie I would expect to catch on cable television but would not purchase it as the rewatchability factor is not very high.
